We have had a lot of questions regarding the lead warning on the label for Uncle Harry's toothpaste. The amount of lead that is naturally occurring in the bentonite clay which is the base of the toothpaste is a small fraction of what is found in organically grown vegetables or the soil that organic vegetables are grown in. Additionally these naturally occurring minerals are not bio available to accumulate in the body.
Here is the response that Uncle Harry's has provided regarding this issue:
Thank you for contacting Uncle Harry's! We are required by law to apply Proposition 65 labels to products containing bentonite clay which are sold in the state of California. This includes all flavors of Uncle Harry's toothpaste. A complete mineral analysis of our toothpaste in the peppermint flavor shows approximately 9 ppm of lead. This means that per brushing there is approximately 0.000000191 ounces of lead, or 5.4 micrograms.

The Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, better known as Proposition 65, was passed to allow California voters to make more informed decisions about their exposure to toxic chemicals. Prop 65 warnings are only required under California law.
